I was thinking this and also thought it when Princess Diana died, suddenly people complaining that she was spending money, blah, blah, blah were all weeping and crying.
Yeah, it's totally the same phenomenon.
It's one thing not to speak ill of the dead. I would rather people interpret that as, "Well, the vast majority of things to say about them are not actually that pleasant, so let's just express our sympathies to the family and then get out of here as quickly as possible."
If you really think a person is the greatest ever, you should maybe consider letting them know while they're alive. Not giving a crap about them one day and then going into hysterics the next because they died is just so... whacked. Especially when, hello, you never even had a real, person-to-person relationship with them! No, sitting somewhere around the 50-yard line at his concert at the Gator Bowl in 1984 doesn't count! (Otherwise, I would just be completely broken up.)
