This mission report went into the temporal rift in March and didn’t pop out until May, by which time it was in trouble (and so was I).<br/>

<tr><td>Mission</td><td style=”width:252px;”>Report</td></tr>
<tr><td>Command - Demonstrate ways to overcome a crafting “no-win” scenario to your cadets by planning and swatching for a project.</td><td>Although I had carefully considered details for my Away Mission for this tour before the tour actually began, my other duties kept me from confirming its viability through proof-of-concept work with the raw materials until after the start of the tour. My first sample came out at the perfect specifications (25x36 st on US4), but I was not sure I liked the lack of density, so I made another sample to smaller specifications (on US3), and ended up calculating that the original sample was superior. But, the extra time was not wasted, as I now had evidence that I could move forward with additional certainty that my mission would ultimately be a success.<br/>
Swatches (tested for sleep-worthiness by my invasive quadrupeds and marked as approved):<br/>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/15941525374" title="Swatch by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7375/15941525374_52323a5967_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Swatch"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Diplomatic - Show your cadets the importance of details by creating something involving detail work or embellishments</td><td>Without detailed facial expressions, this very undiplomatic penguin would look like an unexpressive round ball on top of a tube.<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/16376571250" title="Badtz-Maru by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7403/16376571250_8355e6bb2c_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Badtz-Maru"></a><br/>And he certainly wouldn’t be able to express his indignation at being shoved aside by the giant, undiplomatic invasive quadruped:<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/16378096417" title="Badtz-Maru by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7437/16378096417_2f1cb2fee7_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Badtz-Maru"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Medical - One of the hardest lessons to accept is that you can’t save them all, and sometimes the only thing you can do is give comfort.
<br/>
Your Mission: Teach your cadets how to cope with these situations by creating something comforting, either for yourself or for someone else. Bonus points for charitable submissions.
</td><td>Many cultures on Old Earth long had a tradition of brightening the environment of the ill with the often colorful and pleasantly scented reproductive organs of certain plants. Plants of the genus <it>Tulipa</it> were especially prized for their elegant beauty. I have replicated some and put them on a bunting for wall decoration.<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/16376575100" title="Noelle + Tulips by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8656/16376575100_c4f154af75_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Noelle + Tulips"></a>
<tr><td>Tactical - Teach your cadets the value of thinking quickly by making something very speedy (something that takes a day or less).</td><td>Any Starfleet cadet who has taken the Anomalous Quantum Particles course final exam will already know that concentrating on details while under time pressure is particularly difficult. To practice mental focus while simultaneously watching the clock, I manualy fabricated this special neck gear, which also acts as a sensor to monitor heart rate and blood pressure in tense situations. Keeping track of many small components, manipulating them without the aid of nano-tools, and completing an important piece of equipment are all skills that may be needed during an emergency when the replicators are not available either because of mechanical failure or on an away team mission.<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/15964807853" title="Shiny by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7326/15964807853_dc7bf54ab2_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Shiny"></a></td></tr>

<tr><td>Command: Demonstrate your ability to follow orders by crafting something following a pattern without changing it.</td><td>Q needs to learn discipline and mental focus. Practitioners of some Old Earth religions used a visual tool called a “mandala” to help them focus. Making a mandala was often a painstaking process requiring exacting detail. I tried to demonstrate this kind of discipline to Q by following the directions for Sophie’s Garden exactly, changing colors on every row.<p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/16072593926" title="Mandala Square by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8663/16072593926_efa315e9c7_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Mandala Square"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Engineering: Craft something that requires some decision making (something modified, or a pattern with different options).</td><td>Footwear. So many choices. Of course, Starfleet personnel are rather limited when they’re in uniform, but Q isn’t in Starfleet. He will soon have to learn to worry about things such as adequate toe room, arch support, and proper width, in addition to styles dictated by the occasion. If he ever decides to play the old Earth sport basketball (or decides to become a musician in the late 20th-century Earth style known as “punk rock”), he might need some Chucks. Then he’ll really be faced with lots of decisions, like color, low- or hi-rise, fabric… Eventually he’ll learn firsthand about the psychological stress of ”decision fatigue.” And that’s after a single pair of shoes.<p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/15732859209" title="Baby Chucks by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8665/15732859209_7303ee4f89_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Baby Chucks"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Medical: Craft something to ward off aches and pains - e.g. make a stuffed doll to help Q feel better or craft bandages tor something to keep him warm.</td><td>Q frequently expressed exasperation with humanity (at the same time exhibiting a fascination that wouldn’t allow him to stay away) while he was Q. Now that he’s human, he’ll quickly learn the race is not only a source of mental pain to Q but to its own members as well. In other words, I give him 3 days tops before he gets a roaring headache, probably the throbbing forehead vein kind. Of course, another odd feature of the human race is the fact that many aches and ailments can sometimes be treated just as effectively by psychological tricks as by actual chemical medications. We call this mental trickery “the placebo effect.” This headband doesn’t actually have any inherent physical ability to reduce headache pain, but now that he’s human, a medical officer just needs to tell him that it will, and odds are his headache will dissipate shortly. He’ll just look a little dorky while he’s wearing it, but since he will almost certainly have given half the ship their own headaches by then, they’ll need the laugh (another effective treatment for minor ailments).<p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/15139331183" title="Bruges lace headband by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3955/15139331183_0e356ab7c9_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Bruges lace headband"></a></td></tr>

I'm already doing better for July, though. Stay tuned!<br/><br/>
<b>Command mission</b>: Work with a partner to complete a project. Have a fellow officer help you choose a pattern to go with an orphaned yarn or recommend a yarn to go with a pattern you really like, then craft the cooperative project. Please state your partner officer in your post and explain how they helped you create the final project. This is a great mission for getting to know the officers on your ship.<br/><br/>

For this mission, I teamed with Ensign Chibz, showing him a selection of appropriate-weight cabling and asking him to pick two which would be appropriate. I initially had my doubts when he seemed to like the lime green a little too much, but it worked out in the end.<br/><br/>

Your Mission: Help Jadzia prepare for her wedding by crafting a bridal talisman for luck.<br/>
<bul> Something Old – complete a WIP or frog and rework a project that is in time-out.<br/>
<bul> Something New – craft a new project<bul>
<bul> Something Borrowed – craft a project that is “borrowed” from another officer. Use a pattern, color scheme, stitch pattern, craft, or other idea that was inspired by an officer in Starfleet. This does not necessarily have to be something from their projects or queue. It can be just something mentioned in conversation. This project may be a WIP or a new project. You will need to explain how the idea was borrowed from someone else.<br/>
<bul> Something Blue – craft anything blue. Other colors are allowed as long as the project is predominantly blue. WIPs are accepted for this project.<br/><br/>
<b>My report:</b><br>

<tr><td>Away Mission: A 3-month-long large scale project</td><td style="width:252px;">We have detected yet another planet inhabited by a sentient humanoid race living in conditions akin to Earth’s Stone Age. I would like to study them in person. As remaining hidden from such a population is paramount to preservation of the Prime Directive, I will need foolproof camouflage. As we all know, using holography technology is the main method for doing so, in spite of its countless and sometimes catastrophic failures. I propose, therefore, becoming part of the scenery. <tr><td>Command: Honor Starfleet captains by crafting something to represent one of these captains, or the captain of your own ship</td><td>Easily, the most storied Captain in Starfleet history was James T. Kirk. With this mission report, I make reference both to his ingenuity in battle and mercy in victory, when he was taken by the Metrons to do battle with a Gorn captain:<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/14063702976" title="Gorn by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2906/14063702976_df2abb1bde_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Gorn"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Medical: Craft something to conceal our medical technology or something to disguise anything that would look alien to them.</td><td>As there is no way for Medical Corps personnel to get a hypospray near the Veridians, they want to try dispensing essential medications orally. This bowl prototype is infused with antibiotics. By placing water or water in it, small amounts will leach into the contents and be consumed thusly.<br/><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/13762350825" title="Needle felted bowl by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/13762350825_20d5dc8207_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Needle felted bowl"></a></td></tr>

I had just been perusing some late 20th century literature in that highest of art forms, the “comic book,” namely “The Tick,” which was based on the true story of a crime-fighter who dressed as a blue arachnid species which appears to now be extinct. Next thing I know I was staring eye-to-eye with his occasional crime-fighting partner, the Man-Eating Cow. She looked a little displeased. We did manage to have a pleasant conversation.<br/><br/>

<tr><td>Science - Craft something to show what is unique or unusual about the planet you’ve chosen for your shore leave.</td><td>Having pored over the ships logs of the NCC-1701, I thought I’d take this opportunity to visit the site of one of its classic missions: Gamma Trianguli VI. This is the tropical planet whose inhabitants had been trapped in a state of arrested development by their “god,” a seemingly-omnipotent computer named Vaal. Captain Kirk valiantly freed them from the computer’s tyranny so they could evolve as a civilization. The civilization they evolved into is a free-wheeling tropical gambling mecca centered around their new god: money. But they may continue to change as time goes on. After all, one of Earth’s greatest centers of learning and culture was founded on casino money, but who doesn’t visit Earth without stopping at the wonderful galleries and theaters of Las Vegas?<br/>
<br/>
Back to Gamma Trianguli VI, though. The flowers there, while beautiful, can also be deadly if not handled properly, as several members of Kirk’s original away team learned. Here is one such flower:<br/>

<tr><td>Command - Learn a new technique, try a new pattern, or use new information in some way to isolate, imprison or destroy the Borg Queen.</td><td>As the Borg mastery of technology outstrips our own and means we risk having our own technology turned against us, I decided we should go lower-tech. Using the genetic engineering lab, I modified a flying squirrel to allow it to be trained and coordinated for group attacks. Sending hundreds of these furry creatures zooming at the Borg queen will no doubt overwhelm her so the humanoids can rush in and take her down. I also added bioluminescent genes to the white fur, just because.<br/><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/11470976513/" title="Flying squirrel, attack! by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2853/11470976513_193f628a26_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Flying squirrel, attack!"></a></td></tr>

<tr><td>Medical - Create a hat or other headwear to help shield your mind, and cover implant removal scars.</td><td>This fastener can be used to deftly hold remaining hair in place to conceal healing or balded areas. <tr><td><span style="font-weight:bold;">Mission</span></td>
<td><span style="font-weight:bold;width:250px;">Report</span></td></tr>
<tr><td>Command: Prove your own understanding of the concept of duality: Craft an item made up of two parts (a pair of gloves or socks, for example), or two separate items which mirror each other in some way.</td><td>My mission report on duality may come from a slightly unintended angle. I thought not of the split personalities in the physical copies created by the transporter malfunction on the Enterprise at Alpha 177, but of what they represented: two aspects, however highly contrasted, contained within a whole. Once Captain Kirk was re-integrated, he still contained the contrasting personalities. This report demonstrates that quality: each side is the opposite of the other, but they are indivisible, part of a complete whole and the complement can always be spied from the other angle.<br/>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/11073304474/" title="Fisherman's Rib scarf by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3677/11073304474_3e0b124c0d_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="Fisherman's Rib scarf"></a><br/>
This is also demonstrated by this invasive quadruped. On the one hand, he’s in a comfortable warm lap, yet the total coward side of his personality still shines through. At least he looks handsome modeling the mission report!<br/>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/11060856076/" title="Spoon, Scarf Model by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5481/11060856076_e5097bddd8_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Spoon, Scarf Model"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Diplomatic: Finish up your UnFinished Objects!</td><td>This UFO had been sighted on an earlier tour, but it seemed unspaceworthy and when we tried to catch it in the tractor beam, it disintegrated into balls of yarn. (Strange, but true.) I began working to recreate it in a more stable form in August, and have finally completed the facsimile.<br/>
Status at beginning of the month:<br/>

<tr><td>Engineering: Craft – in black (or another dark color) – something which might be of use to a member of a Landing Party.</td><td>This device not only provides a high-contrast background for the dangerous ore, but particles passing through the detector pores in the fabric will automatically be analyzed and set off an alarm if they pose a threat, either to equipment or personnel.<br/>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/10935133776/" title="Begonia Shawl by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3678/10935133776_b3b2418d88_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Begonia Shawl"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Science: Craft an otherwise plain design, then add embellishment.</td><td>The trims on this simple torso-covering is made of a special fabric with self-activated chameleon-derived color changing pigments. They will automatically identify and display a series of horizontal and vertical bars to communicate the wearer’s identity, rank, and other salient information. Children start learning the patterns and color meanings from an early age, starting first with their parents, until they finally can read the information even for people they never met before. In times of danger, they can force the trim to assume the same coloration as the background ice-storm camouflage fabric to remain unseen.<br/>
(A favorite prank of juveniles is to reprogram their identification trims to appear to be figures of authority. Obviously this works better when they’ve chosen a senior of the same height and build.)<br/><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/10789424365/" title="Mosaic-Trim Pullover by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3818/10789424365_779e11a825_m.jpg" width="240" height="135" alt="Mosaic-Trim Pullover"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>Tactical: Craft something to prevent or treat frostbite.</td><td>My self-tested experiments have found that sipping and holding a container of a warm beverage or food helps warm the fingers and raise the comfort level of warm-blooded humanoids in cold conditions. Therefore I have programmed the replicators to make some nabeyaki udon, a Japanese noodle soup with multiple toppings.<br/><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fuzzykaren/10517548083/" title="Nabeyaki Udon by fuzzykaren, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3693/10517548083_c95820a72e_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Nabeyaki Udon"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td>The Brig</td><td>This prisoner was just in pieces at the beginning of the month. I gave it a good pep talk and told it to pull itself together already! Next Stop, Your Stop!I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. I did, however, move into my permanent (for now) apartment two weeks ago, and have been slowly settling in with the cats.<br/><br/>
I've been commuting most mornings for the past week by taking a bus to the Sunnyvale Caltrain station, and then riding the train. For 5 minutes. To the next stop. Yes, it's slightly silly, but it's less irritating than driving, there's a shuttle from the station to the office, and a bus-only plan isn't very viable, because the VTA bus routes here make even less sense than they do for riders not going to downtown LA. Grid? Ha! Let's just pick two random endpoints, draw some squiggles on the map, and call it a bus route. The "most efficient" bus route to the office, which is less than 10 miles away in the car, is to take a bus west, overshooting the cross-street by a couple miles, then take the bus that I had actually taken while I was in temporary housing. The whole thing would take well over an hour with some waiting in between busses. *shrug* I think I will eventually get a bike, and then I can take the bus west to Stevens Creek Nature Trail and ride about 3 miles north to the office on a trail that has no cars on it (unless the driver has gotten terribly lost). I'll have to work myself up for that.<br/><br/>
Anyway, back to Caltrain. It's the commuter heavy rail here in the Bay Area. The trains are pretty nice, everything has been efficient so far (a train will be 5 minutes late, but that is as bad as it's been). The Sunnyvale station is about 1.25 miles from my apartment, and since the bus schedule starts getting sparse before I make it back, I've been walking home most evenings. The weather here is so much cooler than it is around Glendale, so it's not too warm, even moving around, at that time.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11543289438054489251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4845934381783579268.post-21150320102977944572013-07-11T00:23:00.001-07:002013-07-11T00:23:51.896-07:00Bus Journal: Welcome to the VTASo, I moved up to the Bay Area last month. I've had to do quite a bit of driving, and while drivers up here aren't stupid in quite the same way that Southern California drivers are, they are equally stupid in their own, very special ways. So.... I've been trying out the public transportation here.<br/><br/>
I'd taken the VTA (Valley Transit Authority, for Santa Clara County (home of Silicon Valley)) on previous visits. The buses are generally much nicer, with actual cushioning on the seats, as are the riders I've encountered. (As in generally nicer, not with generally more cushioning on their seats.) However, VTA suffers from the same problem as LA County's Metro: whether a bus can get you where you need to go is hit or miss. Partially because of the shape of the inhabited area of the valley, and partly for reasons that may harken back to a history before my time, coverage is not gridded or even or logical-looking.<br/><br/>
I've already gotten my "Clipper Card," the reloadable card analogous to TAP in LA so you can load bus passes and fares and so forth for the various transit authorities in the area. (San Francisco ferries and BART, the northern Bay light rail, use it, too.) I got a VTA pass. The problem is that, not only is the card reader not in the same place as it is in LA (on the fare machine thing), it's not even consistently in the same other place on every bus. I'll figure it out eventually, maybe.<br/><br/>
I also am getting a Caltrain (heavy commuter rail which runs up into San Francisco, analogous to Metrolink in LA) pass at no cost through work. It turns out that the apartment I seem to be moving to probably won't make the pass quite as useful for the commute, but it will still be useful for going up into San Francisco on the weekends and such. It looks like I'll be just over a mile from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station.<br/><br/>
More on transit here as I figure it out myself...
